Ohio University's Unified Sisters hope to create cultural and romantic connections between OU students with their third annual Dating Game.
The show will take place at 8 p.m. in Baker Center Ballroom and will feature three segments of old-fashioned blind date hook-ups plus entertainment from three professional performance acts.
In the tradition of The Dating Show
each chooser will fire questions at a set of concealed bachelors or bachelorettes. The chooser and his or her favorite contestant win dinner and a movie, courtesy of local restaurants and The Athena.
The group hired performance acts that offer unique cultural insight, said Unified Sisters public relations chair Candice Brooks. The event will feature Hip-Hop Congress's Noble Savages, the Los Disco Dance Team, and Sankofa African Dancers.
The entertainment is pretty diverse Brooks said. We are trying to expose people to different cultures. She said hip-hop is universal and bridges gaps between cultures.
We want to appeal to everyone on campus - minorities and majorities alike she said.
Contestants are selected from a variety of campus groups, including the OU football team, Student Senate, and Greek organizations.
We tried to reach out to get a lot of different people from various organizations involved
Brooks said. Applicants were selected based on interests, personality and campus involvement.
Dating Game has generated positive feedback in the past, including last year's decision to allow audience participation during the elimination process.
We let the audience vote on their picks
since they can see the contestants
Brooks said. The choosers have the option to make their decisions based on the audience's selections, or on their own opinions.
Brooks said a gay or lesbian segment has been considered, but she is unsure whether or not the campus is ready for it.
Probably in the coming years
in the process of being a little more proactive in that area
we will be able to incorporate that
she said.
Admission is $3, or $2 plus a canned good donation for My Sister's Place, a shelter for battered women and children.
