Ohio field hockey captains Amanda Freeman and Elizabeth Holtzman swept Mid-American Conference player-of-the-week honors following the Bobcats' wins over No. 20 Louisville and Miami at Peggy Pruitt Field.
Freeman, who was named defensive player of the week for the first time in her career, led the defense in the 1-0 and 2-1 wins over the Cardinals and the RedHawks, respectively. She also tallied her first assist of the season - and the second of her career - during the Miami game.
She was everywhere. Every time a big play was being made
she was involved coach Shelly Morris said. In the Miami game she created the game-winning goal. She came up with a great tackle
a great play; she exploded through and found the pass.
Holtzman was named offensive player of the week after scoring all three goals during the weekend sweep. She has recorded a team-high seven goals and 16 points this season and scored back-to-back game-winning goals for the second time in her Ohio career.
It was really nice to see [Elizabeth] finally get a couple this weekend
Morris said. She's been playing tremendously
but the ball hadn't been falling for her.
Football freshman wins MAC award
Ohio freshman quarterback Austen Everson was named MAC East division offensive player of the week after accounting for all four Ohio touchdowns in a 28-0 win over Central Florida Saturday.
Everson, who was making his first collegiate appearance, rushed 21 times for 130 yards and three touchdowns, and finished 4-for-4 passing for 118 yards and one touchdown. He gained 248 total yards.
Austen certainly embraced the opportunity
coach Brian Knorr said. He realized how big of a game it was and did an outstanding job.
Everson became the first Ohio player to eclipse 100 yards rushing and passing in the same game since Dontrell Jackson achieved the feat in 1999, and is the first Bobcat to record a 100-yard rushing game this season.
Women's golf sixth at Penn State
The Ohio women's golf team finished sixth of 11 teams at the Nittany Lion Invitational at Penn State last weekend, 47 strokes behind winner James Madison.
Sophomore Julie Tomlinson led the Bobcats with rounds of 80-75-76-231. She finished 15 strokes over par and tied for 15th of 66 golfers for the weekend.
Sara Ann Palmer finished 27th at 79-79-78-236, while Cari Mozingo and Ashley McCall tied for 31st. McCall recorded rounds of 78-83-79-240, while Mozingo finished 82-73-85-240 and carded the fourth-lowest score during the second round.
Ohio, which finished 319-310-318-947, was the only MAC school to participate in the invitational.
Wrestling polls released
The Ohio wrestling team is picked second of six teams in the preseason MAC coaches poll, behind only two-time defending conference champion Central Michigan.
Ohio wrestlers Jake Percival and Joel Weimer are picked to finish first in the 157- and 197-pound classes, respectively, while six other Bobcats are picked to finish fourth or higher in their weight division.
Percival, Weimer and Erik Jones are also nationally ranked in their weight classes by The Wrestling Mall, an amateur wrestling web site.
Percival, the defending MAC wrestler of the year and a two-time All-American, is ranked fourth in the 157-pound division, Jones is 17th in the heavyweight division, and Weimer is 18th in the 197-pound division. _
