Freshmen guided onto the road of success

Last night, Templeton-Blackburn Alumni Memorial Auditorium was filled with potential monsters.

Making College Count: Unleash Your Inner Monster! showed hundreds of freshmen how to adjust to college life and the rigors of college-level academics. As presenter Alan Rhea explained during his lecture, Monsters are students who are absolutely relentless about their own success.

The program was divided into segments that helped students identify their potential, turn their potential into success and recognize eight skills necessary to gain entrance into the graduate school of their choice and obtain their dream jobs.

The idea is to open students' eyes a little bit. We want to show them what graduate schools and employers look for and how to be a winning candidate

Rhea said before he took the stage.

This was the second year Ohio University hosted this lecture. Despite a small turnout of only 250 students last year, this year's event was a success with well over 500 students in attendance. The increase in attendance was due to the collaborative efforts of the Division of Student Affairs, the Women's Panhellenic Association, the Interfraternity Council, the Athletic Department and professors of University Experience, a class for incoming freshman. Some of the groups require freshmen to attend a specific number of college adjustment programs. Most of the attendants were meeting that requirement.

Associate Dean of Students Patti McSteen coordinated the event in hopes that it would help freshman become aware of the issues surrounding the academic adjustment to college and the importance of getting off to a good academic start at OU she said.

Most students enjoyed the event, although several commented that it contained information that they had received in high school, such as the importance of good study habits and the importance of actually attending class.

It was good. I'd heard most of it before except the little things like how to find a study spot and things like that

freshman Caitlyn Walsh said.

Freshman Whitney Hicks echoed Walsh's sentiment. I liked the idea of a list of goals and then hanging it where you can see it every day

she said.

The event came to OU at no cost through the corporate sponsorship of Monster - formerly Monster.com - and its individual sponsors.
