The Ohio women's basketball team failed to overcome 21 turnovers and poor shooting in its first exhibition game Saturday against Athletes in Action as the Bobcats lost 82-63.
The contest was within reach for Ohio for much of the game, but Athletes in Action scored easy buckets and went on a 33-12 run in the final 11 minutes to ensure the victory. The game was the first exhibition for the Bobcats, who begin their regular season against Ohio State on Nov. 21.
The Bobcats led for most of the first half and led 34-31 at the end of the first half, despite shooting 37 percent from the floor and committing 11 turnovers in the first half. The second half was a different story as Athletes in Action outscored the Bobcats 51-29.
I just think our defense had a lot of lapses in the second half
Ohio coach Lynn Bria said.
The Bobcats led by as many as five points. One five-point lead came early in the second half, when guard Elizabeth Brown passed to forward Erin Isbell for a lay-up and gave the Bobcats a 36-31 lead. The two players were bright spots in an otherwise disappointing game for the team. Isbell was the only Bobcat to record a double-double, scoring 15 points and snagging 11 boards.
I have been working... trying to improve offensively because I wasn't much of an offensive threat last year Isbell said.
Elizabeth Brown had a great game as well. She shot 50 percent from three-point range and scored 14 points in the losing effort.
My teammates set a lot of really good screens for me said Brown.
The lead would change hands a few times in the second half. The Bobcats took the lead for the last time with 11 minutes left, after two Erin Isbell free throws put them up 51-49. They would then relinquish the lead as Athletes in Action outscored the Bobcats 33-12 for the remainder of the game.
Many members of the team came away raving about the play of freshman point guard Angel Hornsberger. The Columbus native scored 8 points in 20 minutes in her collegiate debut. She was a perfect 6-for-6 from the free throw line.
She's gonna give us valuable minutes and make a major difference in our team
Bria said. She has great handles
she can penetrate... and really plays great defense.
She's really good on defense... and she's got good composure too
said Isbell.
The Bobcats will look to improve when they play an exhibition game against OGBM Legends Nov. 15 at 2 p.m. in The Convo.
