City hosts Masquerade Ball

Nelsonville residents show up for music, art exhibit

With galleries and businesses open three hours later than usual, about 70 Nelsonville residents spilled into the street for the first Masquerade Ball in Nelsonville.

Stuart's Opera House, 34 Public Square, sponsored the Final Fridays celebration in Nelsonville. Final Fridays - which is free to attend and occurs on the last Friday of each month - is an attempt for local businesses to involve residents in the community by showcasing vendors, live music and art galleries.

We wanted to create something that everyone would feel comfortable going to. It's for all ages

said Tim Peacock, Stuart's Opera House director.

Children watched the juggling stunts of the Nelsonville Medieval Society. The group of about 15 students and Nelsonville residents juggled clubs, flaming sticks and knives. They also entertained the crowd with singing, story telling and stilt walking.

Live music from Gooddog Music, 44 W. Washington St., could be heard throughout the downtown square. Three bands performed throughout the night: punk band Freedom Fries, ska band Deftones and indie rock band Messanina.

This is the first time we've had three bands come down Gooddog Music owner Tom Neumaier said.

At Stuart's Opera House, Margaret F. Cohn, a retired Ohio University Dean Emeritus, opened her exhibit entitled Faces Places and Spirits of Home

which contained photographs created by a technique called emulsion transfer.

After a print is soaked in hot water, the emulsion, which is on the back of a Polaroid picture, is stripped from its backing, manipulated and then placed on watercolor paper. For protection, the transfer is sprayed with ultra violet protected acrylic spray. Each transfer is unique in appearance. Cohn's exhibit will be on display at Stuart's Opera House until Dec. 19.

The night concluded with a costume contest and the winner received tickets to Stuart's Opera House.
