Senators discuss Mill St. residents

The demolition of the Mill Street Apartments and the selection committee for the next president of Ohio University were top issues at the final Student Senate meeting of the quarter last night.

Julie Waters, senator for international student affairs, introduced a resolution requesting assistance for current residents of the Mill Street Apartments in finding new housing.

Waters said the university let the residents know about the demolition on Oct. 23. We don't think that's enough time to find adequate housing for the upcoming year

she said. The residents are mostly international students who will be away over breaks.

The apartments will be closed permanently June 30, 2004.

There are no equivalent housing alternatives on campus that are as cost-effective as the Mill Street Apartments, Waters said. These apartments include all utilities and cable and allow four people to live in a two-bedroom residence. I don't think the university understands that Mill Street is the cheapest she said.

According to the resolution, the university will assist families first, but many single residents will be displaced. It requested the university create an affordable housing option to replace the Mill Street Apartments, consider postponing demolition for one year and hold a public information session for residents to discuss housing options. The resolution was adopted unanimously.

A second resolution confirmed the senate's disappointment that no undergraduate was placed on the presidential search committee. We need to alert the student body to the lack of undergraduate representation South Green senator Linsey Pecikonis said.

Annie Marsico, senator for the College of Arts and Sciences, said three students sat on the last presidential committee in 1994 and that as far as she knows they were all undergraduates.

The resolution strongly recommended at least one undergraduate representative serve on future presidential search committees. It was adopted unanimously.
