The Ohio men's and women's swimming and diving teams opened their regular seasons with meets against Eastern Michigan and Toledo.
The women's team (2-0 overall, 2-0 Mid-American Conference) topped Eastern Michigan (1-2, 0-2 MAC) Friday, 169-129, and recorded first-place finishes in 12 of 16 events. Saturday's meet against Toledo (2-3, 1-1 MAC) produced a similar outcome. The Bobcats tallied 11 first-place finishes in 16 events and won, 174-126.
The men's team (0-1, 0-1 MAC) dropped a 142-94 decision to the four-time defending conference champion Eagles (1-1, 1-0 MAC). Ohio almost came back despite trailing, 76-17, after five events.
The season-opening meets showed the teams where they are and what they need to improve, coach Greg Werner said.
We didn't really know where we were going into it
Werner said. We did a lot of things correctly but we made quite a few mistakes as well. Obviously
we would love to be fantastic
have lifetime bests in everything
and have perfect execution.
A number of swimmers and divers on both squads, though, seemed to have almost perfect execution, including Shannon Kelly, who won five individual events during the two meets, Courtney Gould, who tallied six first-place finishes during the weekend, and Samantha Pfaller, who won the 50- and 100-yard freestyle Friday.
Kelly, Gould and Pfaller also teamed with Irena Stavreska to win both 400 medley relays.
Ohio's women's diving trio of Carrie Martin, Jessica Orlov and Sarah Smith also combined to take three of four first-place finishes with each diver recording a top finish in one event.
The diving helped a lot
Pfaller said. The divers performed really well. Point-wise
that really helped us.
Men mount second-half comeback in loss
The men's team finished first in only four of 13 events during Saturday's loss against the Eagles, but outscored Eastern Michigan, 77-65, during the final eight events.
Freshman Nick Ivey won the 200 breaststroke in 2:12.99, while Adam Thome and Rick Wade won the three-meter and one-meter diving competitions, respectively.
Mike Shelby, Eric Flecher, Donald Jupp and Jonathan Palmer rounded out Ohio's first-place finishes by winning the 400 freestyle relay.
