Members of the Athens High School Parent Teacher Organization presented future plans for the high school library's expansion during last night's Athens City School Board meeting.
Since August, the PTO and school librarian Cathy Heinke have worked to replace materials, update the computer lab and purchase new furniture for the library, said Mary Ann Gulino, PTO secretary. Now, PTO members plan to increase funding for the new library by submitting various proposals, including a proposal for $13,000 to the Athens Foundation to be used to purchase new reference books.
Students at Athens High School have used resources at Ohio University's Alden Library, but Heinke said her goal is to build the high school library's collections so that students will no longer have to compete with OU students for materials.
Dan Lekan, OU student and treasurer of Delta Tau Delta, offered to contribute money from his fraternity's annual fundraiser to the high school library. The fraternity usually raises money for the American Cancer Society, but decided to give locally this year, he said.
In other board news, Superintendent Carl Martin presented a plan for consideration that would create an agricultural vocational program for the next school year. Students participating in the vocational program would form a local Future Farmers of America chapter and take classes in agriculture and agriculture business, he said.
Right now I can't see a lot of draw backs. I think we've got everything in place to get this program started
he said.
Board president Scott Nisley said the board will take a closer look into the possibility of starting the vocational program because 40 students already have expressed interest. 17
