CLEVELAND - A former broker in federal prison for bilking clients of $125 million was indicted on state charges Wednesday that he tried to get state investment business with a bribe.
The target of Frank Gruttadauria's alleged bribe attempt wasn't identified in the Cuyahoga County grand jury indictment announced by Prosecutor William D. Mason. He declined to name the bribe target.
Gruttadauria, 46, tried using a bribe to get investment business from the state, Mason said. He declined to provide specifics.
Asked pointedly if state Treasurer Joe Deters, who controls state investments, was a target of the investigation or had been subpoenaed, Mason would not comment, citing grand jury confidentiality.
Deters, a former Hamilton County prosecutor in Cincinnati, issued a brief statement in response to the indictments.
I was a prosecutor for 15 years and I believe that
no matter the motivation for any investigation anyone asked proper questions by law enforcement should be forthright and truthful he said.
Gruttadauria also was charged with racketeering, theft, money laundering, forgery and election-law violations.
