Within the last year, Elizabeth Brown has made the transition from being a student athlete at a small junior college in Wyoming to the second leading scorer on the Ohio women's basketball team. Brown, who followed her former head coach and current Ohio assistant Gary Becker to Athens, has started 10 of Ohio's 13 games thus far. In December, Brown was named to the all-tournament team of the Hatter Classic, finishing off an undefeated weekend and tournament victory for the Bobcats.
Brown sat down with ¥The Post's¥ T.J. Lasita to discuss transitions. Transitions on the hardwood, and transitions geographically.
The Post: After a stint at Casper College in Wyoming, discuss how you ended up becoming a member of the Ohio women's basketball program.
Elizabeth Brown: One of the old (Ohio) assistant coaches was recruiting another player on my team. She came to a lot of our games and was familiar with our team. When Coach Becker got the position, and Ohio needed an extra player, they came and asked me if I wanted to come here and play with them. Having Coach Becker here, and since he was willing to uproot his entire family to come here, I felt that it must be a good enough program to come here and go to school.
The Post: You've had to make adjustments away from the court as well. What has been your impression of Ohio, in regards to academics and the surrounding environment?
Brown: I've really enjoyed it academically. There's been a lot of courses available that weren't available to me at my junior college. And the atmosphere is very different because there are lots more people here on campus. I really like the different size.
The Post: A large portion of the students at Ohio come from Ohio and the surrounding states. How difficult has it been for you to move across the country?
Brown: When I have time to think about it, it's really difficult. But with basketball, even if I was at home, I wouldn't have much time to be with my family or be home. So in that perspective, it's not too bad. Come the holidays, it gets to be a little hard and not having my family at the games is a little difficult, but the team really helps me a lot with that.
