Four dead in home with high carbon monoxide

COLUMBUS - Four people died after being found unconscious yesterday morning in a house where high levels of poisonous carbon monoxide were detected, authorities said.

A car was found running in the attached garage, which was the likely source of the gas, police spokeswoman Sherry Mercurio said. A friend of the victims discovered the four unconscious.

Killed were Owusu Mike Sekyere, 46; his daughter, Elthl Tracy Sekyere, 11; his son, Michael Sekyere, 21; and a family friend, Shirley Badu, 45, Detective Patrick Dorn said.

Fire department spokeswoman Kelly McGuire said they were found in upstairs rooms of the two-story home.

Carbon monoxide measured eight times higher than the level when the gas is considered a health threat, McGuire said.

Two victims were pronounced dead at the home, and the other two died at area hospitals, Dorn said.

Homicide detectives were investigating, and autopsies were planned.
