Last week, two of my best friends and I were dancing around in the dorms at 2 a.m. singing the lyrics to Good Charlotte's Boys & Girls.
But as we were singing the infamous line Girls don't like boys
girls like cars and money we came to the conclusion that the three of us wouldn't mind a sweet sports car and a few million wouldn't be bad, but what we would really want is one of those boys that we're not supposed to like.
Discovering this, we quickly changed Good Charlotte's lyrics to Girls don't like boys girls like cars and money... and boys.
But we don't want any boys; we are only accepting applications for the nice boys.
See, we are sick of boys throwing themselves a pity party, claiming that their nice boy image has prevented them from being anything but friends with girls.
Nice guys finish last they say... well so do nice girls.
Yes boys, we do exist, and if you haven't found us yet, that leads us to believe you are not looking for us.
Boys, you could turn that around on us girls and say that if we haven't found a nice boy yet then perhaps we are not looking for one either; but the truth is, we are. Our problem is we are constantly getting sidetracked by boys who don't turn out to be so nice after all.
But this is not the guy that cheats on you, kisses random girls in the bars while he is going out with you or passes up an evening with you to watch the game with the guys.
This is the guy that plays with your emotions and doesn't even know it. The guy you meet, become friends with and then develop a liking for. The guy who leaves you wondering when the next time you'll be able to see him.
We girls have guy friends who are innocently affectionate toward us and vice versa, but in these moments we cannot help but think that this could be more than friendship.
But time passes by, and then we girls discover the signs that we missed all along. Nice boy is in fact not a nice boy, but rather a flirty boy who really has no romantic interest in you, but just likes to touch every girl who is his friend. But since it is our friendship that first attracted us to him, we continue to be his friend and watch as he tries to find the girl of his dreams.
And what does the nice girl win in the end for her liking? A friend and a medal composed of a little naivete and some oblivion that reads: You have finished last.
