New concealed carry law will not affect OU weapons policy

For Ohio University students, the new concealed carry law will carry little weight for campus life. Firearms will still be banned from campus in accordance with the law itself and the OU Student Code of Conduct.

Possession of firearms is a code A offense that carries a maximum penalty of expulsion and a minimum penalty of a reprimand from OU judiciaries. Any dangerous weapon, such as illegal knives, explosive devices or fireworks, violates the code of conduct.

The student code of conduct is available on the university Web site at http://www.ohiou.edu/

judiciaries/conduct.htm.

Universities are exempt from the concealed carry law except if an individual has a locked weapon with a permit in their locked vehicle

said John Burns, director of legal affairs at OU.

Michael Meeks, a member of the Second Amendment Club at OU, said although the passage of the law would have little effect on student life, he was happy it passed. Although the club has no plans yet for informational meetings regarding the law, Meeks stressed the importance of student awareness about firearms.

Everybody should know that they have the legal right to carry a concealed weapon in case they may ever need to defend themselves he said.
