OU graduate captures texture in photography exhibit

An upcoming photography exhibit challenges viewers to look further to find the texture in various places.

The exhibit, Beyond First Glance

opens tomorrow, from 1 to 3 p.m., at Starving Wolf and Yellow Moon Cafe, 11310 Jackson Dr., The Plains. The show runs through January.

Shannon Williams, a 2003 Ohio University graduate with a bachelor's of science in visual communications, took many of the pictures for her degree project in graphic design. This exhibit is a continuation of that project. She decided in the summer before her senior year to capture texture wherever it may be.

Williams shot photos with the general idea, there's really beautiful things in the detail. This included such things as rust on a stop sign.

The exhibit's focus is the texture captured, rather than the objects themselves. Williams hopes to incite people to just kind of look around a little more.

She traveled with her boyfriend, Justin Zimmerman, to take pictures. Zimmerman also has photos displayed in the show.

Zimmerman, an assistant professor at Denison University as well as a filmmaker, said they took trips to film festivals and conferences where they took the photos for the exhibit. Williams has helped him with graphic design on some of his films, and he was able to help her with this project.

Some of the photos on display are from Pittsburgh, Georgia and Appalachian Ohio. Zimmerman said it was interesting to see Williams find the texture in various places.

It was neat to see someone investigate something so closely he said.

The photos are displayed individually and in series based on different qualities, she said. All photos were shot using 35 mm film.

Williams is a graphic designer for Ohio University Press and lives in Athens. She displayed her photos at the 2003 Ohio University School of Art Graphic Design Senior Show and plans to continue this show at Donkey Coffee & Espresso, 17 1/2 W. Washington, in February.

The opening of the exhibit is free to the public. Starving Wolf and Yellow Moon Cafe owner Missy Whaley said they have been displaying art in the cafe since they took over in Jan. 2003.

The Starving Wolf and Yellow Moon Cafe is open from 5 to 9 p.m. Wednesday through Saturday, Whaley said.
