OU women focus on defense, Akron Zips, and foul-shooting

One area in which the women's basketball team has been struggling in all season is on defense.

Opponents have been shooting 43.7 percent against the Bobcats, placing Ohio last in the Mid-American Conference in that category. Teams have been able to light it up from the outside, shooting nearly 40 percent from beyond the arc against Ohio. That is also the worst in the MAC.

This has been the focus of coaches in recent practices.

I think our biggest problem right now is that we aren't doing a very good job on the perimeter of containing the offensive player

assistant coach Gary Becker said.

Bobcats to take on Zips

The Bobcats will look to pick up their first conference victory of the season when they take on the Akron Zips this Friday. The Zips are currently worst in the MAC in scoring offense, netting 53.9 points per game. They are also shooting a MAC-low 33.5 percent from the floor on the season.

I think when you get into conference they're all big games. Becker said. But I think the focus for our team and for us as a coaching staff is how are we gonna get there and how are we playing not... what the score is on the board.

Foul Trouble

The Bobcats had a season-high 32 fouls against Northern Illinois, and the Huskies had 25. It turned out to play a huge factor in the final score, with the Bobcats shooting 15-for-26 from the charity stripe and Northern Illinois was 29-for-40 from the line.

We attacked the basket and got to the line but we just did not convert on the free-throw line

guard Andrea Gay said.

Free throws have been stressed by the coaches in practice.

Andrea Johnson

One player who has been playing well in the past few games is guard Andrea Johnson. She scored 11 points against Northern Illinois and had a team-high 18 points against Ball State.

She's really stepped it up a lot for us

Gay said. She's a great penetrator.
