Week concludes with makeovers, discussion

The Front Room, in Baker University Center, was so gay last night as the Swarm of Dykes capped off their second annual That's So Gay Week with a program titled Queer Eye for the What?

SOD closed out the week with the mock Queer Eye For the Straight Guy presentation and a discussion on the phrase, that's so gay. Last year they presented a weekend of workshops, but this year SOD extended it to a week of events.

SOD President Rusty Toomey said, I was really pleased with the success this year considering it's only the second time we've done it.

Toomey, along with SOD member Ashley Randall, hosted the event and, like the Bravo channel show, helped make over four predetermined crowd members. The contestants to receive clothing makeovers were Megan Snow, Julia Pels, Elizabeth O'Hara and Paul Patton, Lesbian Gay Bisexual and Transgender commissioner for Student Senate.

After the contestants left to receive their makeovers the discussion began, led by SOD members Danielle Fink and Jess McComb. Audience members were not bashful about voicing their opinions on topics ranging from the improper uses of the word gay to personal accounts of hateful encounters and origins of the phrase, that's so gay.

Members of the crowd debated whether to confront the closed-minded people abusing the phrase or let it pass.

After the discussion, the hosts announced a cigarette break before the grand finale.

Patton started the evening in a button-down shirt and cargo khakis. After his makeover he sported a red football jersey, baggy jeans and a visor flipped upside down. Snow began with a zip-up hooded sweatshirt, T-shirt and jeans. The makeover put her in a more feminine outfit of a jean skirt, flowery blouse and a Mary Kate & Ashley Olsen headband.

Prior to Pels' makeover she described her outfit as the GAP look

but after her makeover she resembled a snowboarder in baggy jeans, a long-sleeve T-shirt and beanie. Finally, O'Hara started with a spaghetti strap top, skirt with hose and knee high boots. She finished the night in a sweater and khakis with her hair in a bun.

We spent about $200 on this event at Wal-Mart for the clothes Toomey said.

LGBT coordinator Mickey Hart said of the makeovers, It looks like the cast of the new Breakfast Club.
