Guard sets milestone

There was no celebration, game stoppage or ceremony following guard Candace Bates' third made field goal of yesterday's 76-55 loss to Bowling Green.

Under normal circumstances, of course, no player's third made shot would merit a celebration, but this field goal marked Bates' 1,000th career point as a Bobcat. As unselfish a player as she has been throughout her four years in Athens, then, it was appropriate that the milestone's only mention was a brief announcement following the shot.

If anything

I think she could have gotten 1 000 a long time ago coach Lynn Bria said. She's so unselfish

and that's a good quality to have. It distinguishes her

and I'm proud of her for that.

Despite Bates' 10 points and forward Erin Isbell's 13 points and 13 rebounds, the Bobcats (9-12 overall, 3-7 Mid-American Conference) never held a lead during the game and could not draw any closer than 10 points over the final 27 minutes.

I felt like we were outplayed

Bria said. They played very

very well and hit some tough shots. They were probably the first team we've played that has five people that can hit from beyond the arc. We played Ohio State and they didn't have that.

Though Ohio held a 37-35 rebounding edge and grabbed 11 offensive caroms, the game's fate laid in the Falcons' 22 forced turnovers and nine 3-pointers.

There's no excuse for that because we knew they were going to be strong on transition

Bates said. They were going to shoot outside and inside. Everyone on their team can shoot the outside shot.

Bowling Green (14-7, 7-3 MAC) averages more than six 3-pointers per game and hit better than 34 percent from outside the arc.

The Falcons hit their first three 3-point attempts en route to an early 21-5 lead. Ohio outscored Bowling Green, 15-12, over the next eight minutes before both teams combined to go another four minutes without a point between them.

The Bobcats trailed 37-22 at halftime and fell behind by as much as 23 during the second half.

This game was tough because we did play so well in our last game

Bria said. It really makes you start to question and wonder what the difference was between then and now.

The Falcons might have also had extra motivation for what was their only trip to The Convo until the 2005-06 season.

Certainly

going into this game
