Hajj commences

As the last month of the lunar calendar begins each year, Muslims around the world prepare to commemorate Eid al-Adha, an annual three-day celebration beginning on the tenth day of the sacred month of Dhul Hijjah, or The Month of the Hajj.

From Athens, Ohio, to Mecca, Saudi Arabia, the celebration commenced on Sunday with prayer and thanksgiving to Allah and will continue into this evening when large feasts will be hosted to mark the event's conclusion.

Members of the Muslim Student's Association congregated for Eid prayer on Sunday.

Following the event, those financially able returned to their homes to slaughter an animal in remembrance of Abraham's willingness to sacrifice his son to God's will.

Tonight the organization will host an Eid celebration at the Islamic Center, 13 Stewart St. Mohammad Haider, treasurer of the Muslim Student's Association, said the event would be a time of great celebration for the entire Muslim community.

We are going to have a big feast. Everybody brings food and those that have slaughtered animals will bring the meat

Haider said.

The event begins at 8:30 p.m. and will parallel feasts taking place in the Muslim holy city of Mecca.
