Ohio women's lacrosse is looking to start its season off on the right foot with a pair of wins during a two-game homestand this weekend.
We try not to stress home games versus away
but there is a certain level of comfort you have when you are playing on your own field coach Kate Brew said.
Last season, the Bobcats were 5-10 overall (1-5 American Lacrosse Conference). Ohio went 2-5 (0-3 ALC) at home last year.
The Bobcats opened their 2003 season in similar style but on the road, where they posted a 17-8 win at Albany. Brew said that opening the season against Albany is a good way to see how her team is developing.
Albany is extremely fast in the midfield Brew said. They have good runners and a great offensive transition. They are a newer
developing team much like we are. There is a lot of energy in their program which is much similar to ours.
Brew said to expect many new things on offense and defense from the Bobcats who will work to neutralize Albany's speed.
We know who their key defensive players are and what we can do to try and stop them
said Brew. Slowing them down will be important.
Brew is also expecting good things from Ohio's veteran team, which showcases 13 upperclassmen.
Right now we are very solid on the field
Brew said. We have senior Jen Cassidy in the net and experience all over the field. The team is finally coming together.
Cassidy covered the net in all 15 of last season's games and made 142 saves, posting a .464 save percentage.
Midfielders Becky Oxman and Lynz Keys have already been named to the Preseason All-Conference Team by the ALC. Last season, the pair scored 37 and 31 points, respectively. The awards are a confidence boost for the Bobcats but not one that Brew said will distract from the focus on team success.
It is great we are starting to get the recognition we deserve
but the team is focusing more on the unit right now
Brew said.
The Bobcats will take on Albany today at 1 p.m. and Duquesne Sunday at the same time. Ohio dropped its mid-season game to Duquesne last year, 13-8. Both games are non-conference games and will take place at Pruitt Field.
