Track gets help from young and old at Ohio State Invite

The Ohio men's and women's track teams turned in key performances both from its veteran leaders and its up-and-coming youth Saturday at the Ohio State Invitational.

No team scores were kept, but both the men and women earned a first-place finish in one event, as well as several other top finishes.

Sprinter/jumper Scott Mayle continued his dominance of the long jump, winning with a leap of 24 feet, 4 1/2 inches. He outjumped his closest competition by more than a foot.

Meanwhile, distance runner Andrea Maas won the women's 3000 meter race with a time of 10 minutes, 43 seconds. The entry list in the event was short, but Maas said she could have done even better had the pack been bigger.

I wasn't really that happy with my time at all

she said. I think if there were more people closer to where I was I'd be able to push more.

Maas, a freshman, ran the 3000 for the first time Saturday but drew from experience running the 2-mile in high school, she said.

Hurdler/jumper Foli James, coming off two wins at last week's Central Collegiate Championships, performed solidly as well. She placed second in both the long jump (18' 10 3/4) and the high jump (5' 4 1/2) and third in the 60 hurdles (8.67 seconds).

Other top performances for the women included: sprinter/jumper Monique Taylor, third in the women's triple jump (37' 2 1/2); sprinter Jenn Maas fifth in the 400 (1:00.18); sprinter/hurdler Jericka Duncan

sixth in the 60 hurdles (9.05); and the 1600 relay team

third (4:06.39).
