Court proceedings begin for accident charges

Two Athens County residents were arraigned Friday in connection with a January car crash that killed two local teenagers.

The driver of the car, Jana M. Miller, 16, entered a plea of denial to two counts of aggravated vehicular homicide and one count of driving while intoxicated. The maximum penalty is probation until age 21. A plea of denial in juvenile court is roughly equivalent to pleading not guilty in other court systems.

Miller, of 5389 State St. in Albany, is a sophomore at Athens High School. Her pre-trial is set for April 14 at 10 a.m. in Athens County Juvenile Court. Miller's license has since been suspended.

The charges stem from a Jan. 24 accident in which Maggie J. Tabler, 16, and Olivia G. Sole, 14, were killed. Miller, Tabler and Sole were driving east on State Route 681 when the 1998 Toyota Miller was driving went off the road, overturned and slid into a creek.

Tabler, of Albany, was a sophomore at Alexander High School. Sole, of Athens, was a freshman at Athens High School.

Ohio University senior Rebecca L. Mingus, 21, of 3 N. May Ave. in Athens, pleaded not guilty to two counts of contributing to the delinquency of minors and two counts of furnishing alcohol to minors. All are misdemeanor offenses with a possible six months in jail on each charge.

Mingus was released on her own recognizance. Her pre-trial will be decided at a later date.

Thomas Louden, Delaware County Juvenile Court Judge, will hear the cases in Athens County Juvenile Court.

The arraignment for Ryan A. Mingus, 18, of 3 N. May Ave. in Athens, who is charged with five counts of contributing to the delinquency of a minor and one count of keeper of a place where alcohol is furnished to minors, is set for Friday.
