Editor's Note: Angela Shelton did not disclose names during her speech or in her documentary.
William Shakespeare asked, What's in a name? Angela Shelton found rape, abuse and molestation in hers.
Shelton, a documentary filmmaker, spoke last night in Baker Center Ballroom about her hunt to find every Angela Shelton in America.
I thought it was gonna be funny
the North Carolina native said of her documentary aspirations. I wanted to do a comedy - travel around the country in an RV.
What she found was 32 Angela Sheltons - 16 were either raped, beaten or molested, including Shelton.
Her parents divorced when she was 3 years old and her mother, a free spirit let Shelton decide who she wanted to live with. She chose her father because his new wife, Carol, made Kool-Aid. But during the next five years she was forced to ride around in the back of a van naked - we were always naked in the van - while (Carol) was fingering my sister.
Carol aided the molestation of the children in other ways. Shelton said she remembered her older sister, Alissa, being sent into her father's bedroom where he was, lying on the waterbed naked waiting for her to jerk him off. I was taken away so I wouldn't hear.
