Anderson Laboratory, built in 1973, is in the planning stages for its eventual destruction.
Until we knock the building down
there is no guarantee said John Kotowski, assistant vice president for facilities planning. I think that it is in the best interest of the university to tear it down.
Anderson is an outdated building, Kotowski said. It was originally used to house animals for psychology experiments but has been converted to extra laboratory space for the use of psychologists.
Ben Ogles, department chair of the psychology department, said the laboratories have been having troubles with heating and air conditioning, electricity and space. It's just not very useful for someone who is doing research on human subjects he said.
If we didn't raze the building we would need to put a lot of money into it to make it work
Ogles said.
The university built Anderson at a cost of $650,000.
Four labs were added recently, but the 13 or 14 psychologists who currently use Anderson Laboratory are tapping it to its max
Ogles said.
We are quickly running out of space in the psychology department
said assistant professor of psychology Steven Patterson. We need more space.
Kotowski said after the new student center is built, Porter Hall will get an addition. Psychologists who currently are using Anderson will be able to use more updated labs.
He also said that leveling Anderson would open up expansion and improvement opportunities for Grover Center and Bird Arena.
