Men's swimming 2nd at MAC

The Ohio men's swimming and diving team finished the first day of Mid-American Conference Championships in second place with 290 points.

Favorite and meet host Eastern Michigan slid into first place, winning four of six events, and ended the night with 294 points.

Two highlights of the first day came in the 50-yard freestyle and 1-meter diving events, which were considered strengths for Ohio. Freestyler Donald Jupp took second place in the 50 with a time of 20.79, and diver Robert Krichbaum took second in the one-meter diving with a score of 283.35.

In addition to Jupp, the Bobcats placed two others in the top eight in the 50 - Jan Wuttig in fifth (21.04) and Mike Shelby in seventh (21.24). Distance freestyler Jon Palmer dropped almost two seconds off his preliminary 500 free time by swimming 4:31.06 in the finals, which was good enough for fourth. The 200 free relay also proved to be a strong point for Ohio. The team of Shelby, Jupp, Wuttig and Jason Folt finished in second behind Eastern Michigan with a time of 1:22.33. Day two of the championships begins today with preliminary races at noon and finals at 7 p.m.
