Nelsonville school accepts book donations

During last night's Nelsonville-York School Board meeting, the Emblem Club presented the school board with a donation of 70 books for the library.

Emblem, the ladies' auxiliary to the Elks, teamed up with EdMap, a Nelsonville-based textbook distribution center, to donate the books. Trisha Gail, a member of the Emblem Club, worked with Nelsonville-York Elementary School librarian Nancy Smathers to decide what books to order.

We're very excited about the donation

said Smathers after the meeting. The students have been asking for these books.

The donation comprised both current favorites and classics. The wildly popular Harry Potter series was purchased along with the time-tested Charlotte's Web. The Emblem Club asked for donations from local businesses and also from friends and family. The books were bought at store cost, EdMap employee Tracey Sinnott said.

Additionally, the Emblem Club presented a check for $115 to the school board, to be used for supplies at the librarian's discretion.

The board also accepted a $500 donation from Charles Williams on behalf of his brother, John Williams. John Williams was killed March 19, 1945, in the attack on the U.S.S. Franklin. This is the 19th year that Charles Williams has donated to the school.

Also during the meeting, Superintendent Ted Bayet proposed a switch in refuse hauling from Waste Management to Rumpke Waste, Inc. He said changing to Rumpke for refuse hauling would save the school district more than $3,000. The board passed Bayet's proposal.

The board also approved a seventh-grade overnight trip to Columbus. The trip has been an annual event for the last five years. Between 70 and 80 students usually make the trip to the state's capital. 17
