Beginning today, the Ohio Bureau of Motor Vehicles will issue new license plates.
The plates will have the same red, white and blue striped design as the current bicentennial plates, but will now feature the sunburst from the Seal of Ohio in the background. It will also have Birthplace of Aviation printed beneath Ohio.
Another change is the combination of letters and numbers; the plates revert to the three-letter-and -four-number scheme used for plates in previous years.
The characters on normal plates will be embossed, but characters on special or personalized plates will be applied digitally and flat, said Julie Ehrhart, spokeswoman for the Ohio Department of Public Safety. The digital method is used to cut costs.
Motorcycle plates will be reduced a half-inch in height, to measure four inches by seven inches. The change was made to fit in brackets.
Base fee for a set of new plates is $31 for passenger plates and $25 for motorcycles. In addition, there is a $20 Athens County permissive tax, a $3.50 registrar fee, a 75-cent sticker fee and a $1 new plate fee for each.
Personalized plates carry an additional $35 fee and special plates, such as a collegiate or professional sports team plate, have an additional $0-$35 fee, depending on the plate. Disability and veterans' plates are free of charge.
