It's official: Ryan White has turned into a legitimate college pitcher.
The right-hander tossed 4 1/3 innings of two-hit relief to earn his first career win in the Bobcats' 10-7 victory against James Madison yesterday.
He's a huge asset on this team
Ohio outfielder Bryan Buck said.
But White hasn't taken the typical college path. After being told he wasn't good enough to make the Ohio team as an infielder, White became a pitcher. After only pitching 2 2/3 innings in the past two seasons, he has been a key cog in the Bobcats' relief corps.
It's very rewarding White said. All the hard work and all the preparation certainly has paid off. You know it's been a great ride
and I wouldn't change it for the world.
Yesterday, he transformed a loss into a win. White (1-0) picked up for starter Adam Russell who pitched three solid innings before giving up six runs, including a two-run homer in back-to-back innings to Dukes' third baseman Nick Schill.
He gave up no walks, had two strikeouts and allowed only an unearned run.
I would say (he pitched) outstanding
Ohio coach Joe Carbone said. Here's what college baseball is all about. This kid got cut for two years as an infielder. Then the next year
we take him as a pitcher
and I think he got (2 2/3) innings. Last year
he was on the team the whole year and never got in the game.
