The National Collegiate Athletics Association banned ephedrine in 1997 to prevent student athletes from seeking a competitive advantage, but its concern now is that ephedrine is sometimes hidden in supplements that athletes are not aware of, Ohio Assistant Athletic Trainer Shannon Gordon said.
The NCAA limits what athletic trainers can give student athletes in order to maintain a more level playing field. Gordon said Ohio does not distribute or even endorse supplements, mostly because the FDA does not currently regulate most of them. However, the training staff does try to educate athletes about the dangers of supplements.
They don't have to list the ingredients
so sometimes you don't even know what you are taking Gordon said. That's where I see athletes getting in trouble.
