Tropical winds lure Athens residents south for getaway

After ten weeks of cold weather, cloudy skies and the same classes, most students are ready to escape Athens and their cabin fever for sun, fun and drinking on the beach.

Many students go to cities in Florida such as Panama City Beach and Miami for spring break, said Steve Roley of Uniglobe Hocking Hills Cruise & Travel. Another popular destination is Cancun, Mexico.

Many students go to Florida because they can drive

Roley said. It is easy to access it is warm there are beaches

it is cheap and there are a lot of night clubs.

There are many discount travel packages students can choose from when going on spring break, Roley said. But many students chose to drive if they can and put six to seven people in a room for a few hundred dollars.

Sophomores Jen Interliggi and Emily Magill are going to Panama City with 13 friends. Interliggi said they reserved three bedrooms for the fifteen girls, putting an extra person in each room to save money.

Mainly we are going to Panama because a lot of people go there and it is not too expensive

Interliggi said.

Magill said they are driving and it will only cost them about $320 each.

I'm mostly just excited to get out of Ohio

Interliggi said. I think the ride down will be fun too because we are making a lot of fun CDs.

The women plan to go to the beach during the day and clubs at night, Interliggi said.

And drinking a lot

Magill said.

Most students are attracted to spring break trips because of the fun, sand, water and unlimited alcohol, said Beverly Schultz of Places to Go Travel.

Sophomore Sibel Pistar and junior Kelly Parker are going to Santa Monica, Calif., Parker's hometown, with two other friends. They are planning a week of lying on the beach, going to Hollywood clubs and maybe even a trip to San Diego.

Pistar expects to pay around $340 for her hotel and flight combined, she said.

But Schulz said most students can expect to pay between $700 and $1,000 total on spring break.

Uniglobe Hocking Hills Cruise & Travel offers seven nights in Panama for $195 and for $429 in Cancun.

Cancun is popular now because it is Americanized, Roley said. There are lots of bars and restaurants, it is more economically feasible and the drinking age is only 18.

Sophomore Cory Smith bought a package to Cancun for under $700. It includes the hotel, flight, food and unlimited drinks at the hotel, he said.

Most of us have never been there

Smith said. We thought we might as well go now while we are still young and have the money.
