Vehicle ignites near Convo

A car caught on fire around 12:15 p.m. Friday in The Convo's parking lot.

The cause of the fire is unknown, but a gas leak or an electrical short could have caused it. No one was injured in the fire, said Ohio University Police Department Officer George Anderson.

OU sophomore Josh McConaughy said he realized something was wrong with his car, a blue Ford Tempo, when he smelled it burning as he was driving. After trying unsuccessfully to start the car after it stalled, he decided to check the engine.

I tried to open the hood

and everything was on fire he said.

McConaughy said he tried to put the fire out with antifreeze that he had in his car, but it did not work.

A bunch of people came with fire extinguishers but we still couldn't put it out

he said.

Anderson said he tried to put out the fire with his fire extinguisher, and then called Athens Fire Department when that did not work. Firefighters put out the fire and pushed the car into an unoccupied parking space.
