Former 'View' co-host, journalist coming to speak about career

Lisa Ling, former co-host of ABC's The View

is scheduled to speak at 8 p.m. Friday, April 30 at Templeton-Blackburn Alumni Memorial Auditorium in an event co-sponsored by the University Program Council, College of Communication, International Student Union and Association For Women In Communications.

Tickets, which are $6 for students and $9 for non-students, go on sale Thursday, April 22, at the Mem Aud box office.

Ling is probably best known for her work on The View the multi-generational talk show with panelists including Barbara Walters. She also worked as a journalist on Channel One News, a program seen in middle and high schools nation wide.

She is currently the host of National Geographic Ultimate Explorer on MSNBC and will speak about women and minorities in communications, centering the discussion around her own experience, said UPC special events chair Natalie Pariano. Ling also will talk about her influences, including her mother.

The event coincides with Ohio University Mom's Weekend, and Pariano said that the event would appeal to both students and mothers because of Ling's time on The View and because she is a well-respected journalist. The fact that many OU students are involved in the College of Communications and the E.W. Scripps School of Journalism also factored into the decision to select Ling.

UPC usually brings a speaker to campus during Mom's Weekend, Pariano said, with past speakers including Maya Angelou and Margaret Cho.
