Future matriarchs see college as fallback option

With 276 majors to choose from at Ohio University and a greater opportunity in the work force, female students today are faced with an abundance of options. But generations still are following the trend of being stay-at-home moms.

It is not that I do not want a career

sophomore Laura Settle said. But ever since I was little all I have wanted was children. My friends all make fun of me because my favorite store is the Baby Gap.

There is not one profession women should pursue, said Settle, an anthropology major. Some women are well suited for their professions, but for others motherly abilities come naturally, and these qualities should be explored.

Freshman Amanda Auletta said she thinks that she has experienced the whole dating scene and knows what type of husband she is looking for. Especially after four years of college, she said, she would know what she wants in life, most likely a family.

I plan on having a career Auletta said. I might work for a year get married

settle down

get a house and stop working to raise my children.

In the new feminist age, people need to know that raising children is a viable option, Settle said. People should think that taking 20 years out of one's life to raise children is noble.

Society says you should want to have more in life than just a family and kids

but what is wrong with that? Settle said.

Freshman Megan Humeniuk and her fiance already have plans to start a family when she is 24 or 25, she said. But her parents encouraged her to go to college because of her academic success in high school.

I want to be there to raise my kids

but it depends on our financial situation

said Humeniuk, who is exploring career options as an English major.

Auletta also said the college experience is important.

If I was to graduate and work at McDonald's for the rest of my life

I think college will have been worth it

she said.

It is important for people to know more than what they learn in high school, Settle added. She said she thinks that people need to move away from home, see the world and live before they pick a career or decide to have a family.

I'm here to better myself

Settle said. I take classes that interest me and classes I know that I am going to get something out of.

Settle said she would love to teach, and this stems back to her love for children.

My mom was a housewife and she was always telling us girls to never be dependent on a man and that is why I am here
