Central Michigan gymnast Sara Burtinsky ended her season with a 23rd place finish in the all-around competition at the NCAA Championships last Thursday with a score of 39.275.
She started the competition on bars with a score of 9.825. She followed that with a 9.775 on beam and a 9.825 on floor. She scored a 9.85 on her last event of the competition, the vault.
Burtinsky competed in Nationals for the first time.
Tennis honors awarded
Western Michigan tennis player Jose Orozco was named Mid-American Conference Men's Tennis Player of the Week after helping the Broncos to the 2004 conference regular season title.
He won 7-5, 7-6 (7-5) in No. 3 singles over Ball State's Patrick Thompson to clinch the team victory against the Cardinals.
Orozco ended the MAC regular season with a perfect 5-0 record in singles play.
Eastern Michigan's Victoria Domina and Megan Zimpfer of Miami were both named the Women's Player of the Week.
Domina went a combined 4-0 in singles and doubles play last week to finish the regular season 9-0 in No. 1 singles in the MAC.
She defeated Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) No. 114-ranked Irina Strembisky of Akron 6-0, 6-1 and Miglena Nenova 6-2, 6-1.
Domina is ranked No. 113 in the ITA rankings.
Zimpfer also won this award after going a combined 4-0, 2-0 each in singles and doubles, against Northern Illinois and Western Michigan last week.
She ended the regular season with an 8-1 record in singles and doubles conference play.
Zimpfer won her last seven singles matches.
MAC Scholar Athlete of the Week awarded
Central Michigan's Amber Puchalski and Toledo's Brad Heaven were named Scholar Athletes of the Week on April 20.
Puchalski, a child development major who has a 3.09 GPA, went 4-0 this week with a 0.36 ERA. Her victories included two shutouts to give her a career total of 33, tying the Central Michigan record. She won both games of a doubleheader against Kent State, and took a perfect game into the seventh inning of a 3-0 win.
Puchalski struck out 31 batters while walking four in 19 2-3 innings of work last week. She allowed only eight hits and one run holding her opponents to a .119 batting average. She is 8-0 in MAC games with a 0.38 ERA.
Heaven, an administrative services major, tied for first with a two-under par 214 (69-72-73), but lost on the second hole of a play-off to Kent State's Ryan Yip. Heaven forced the play-off with a 20-foot birdie putt on the 18th hole. His performance helped the Rockets to a third place tie in the 18-team field.
Heaven, who has a 3.30 GPA, leads the MAC with a 71.83 stroke average.
