After falling into a quick eight-run deficit, the Ohio baseball team was forced to play catch up all day, and never recovered, dropping an 11-3 decision to Cincinnati yesterday at Bob Wren Stadium.
Ohio starter Marc Cornell, making his second start of the season, allowed eight Bearcats (8-28) to cross the plate in three innings of work. The rough start put Ohio (12-21) in a hole from which it never could emerge.
Three of the first four Cincinnati hitters reached in the first inning, loading the bases for shortstop Drew Saylor, who promptly unloaded the bases with a grand slam over the left field wall. Two batters later, designated hitter Aaron Moll hit a two-run shot of his own, this one off the batter's eye screen in dead center, giving the Bearcats a quick 6-0 advantage.
Basically
the biggest thing was location all day Cornell said. I left everything up.
Ohio coach Joe Carbone said he decided to stick with Cornell (0-2) for three innings, regardless of the score.
We didn't think he threw the ball well in the first inning but
if you go there and take him out
we're not going to be able to see if he can help us this year
Carbone said. We just made the decision that we were going to go with him
and he's going to pitch three innings
no matter what the score is
so we see if we can get him back and help him out in the conference.
After escaping the second unharmed, a pair of walks and two RBI singles upped the Cincinnati lead to 8-0 in the third inning. Regardless, Carbone said he thought his right-hander threw the ball better in the third than he did the first two innings.
Cornell said he underwent a mental adjustment in his third and final inning of work.
I got pissed off
flat out
Cornell said. I think when I went out in the first inning
