Once troubled private Youngstown prison reopens

YOUNGSTOWN - A 2,016-bed private prison that closed three years ago amid security problems has reopened, the company that runs it said Wednesday.

More than 500 workers lost their jobs in 2001 when the same company put the Northeast Ohio Correctional Center, the state's only privately owned and operated prison, on inactive status.

The U.S. Marshals Service began sending inmates this week to the prison, which will house about 300 prisoners, said Nashville, Tenn.-based Corrections Corp. of America.

The company hired 135 employees and said that number may increase to as much as 400 depending on prison growth, said John Ferguson, chief executive officer.

The company is the nation's largest owner and operator of private prisons. It operates 64 facilities in 20 states with a total capacity of 65,000.
