Concealed handguns are not allowed on Ohio University property or property leased to the university, according to the new concealed-carry law that goes into affect today.
Section 2923.126 (B) of the law states that a licensee cannot carry a concealed handgun on any premises owned or leased by any public or private college, university or other institution of higher education. The only exception is if the handgun is in a locked vehicle or in the process of being locked away.
OU spokesman Jack Jeffery said if OU leases property from someone else such as the HDL Center, 160 W. Union St., or judiciaries in the Beckley Building, 50 S. Court St., then the law for universities applies.
If you lease land from us
then the university laws do not apply the state law does he said. The property is no longer under the university's jurisdiction.
Ohio University leases land to Wal-Mart, 929 E. State St. and Athens Mall, 765 E. State St. Another case that will only have to follow the general state law is Riverpark Towers, 36 N. McKinley Ave., because the apartments are leased to each student, Jeffery said.
The only way handguns will be allowed on university property is if they are locked in a licensee's car according to state law, he said. The handguns cannot be concealed on a person when on university property.
