A scholarship fund has been created to honor the life of Ariana Ulloa, the former director of the Department of International Programs at Hocking College.
The Ariana R. Ulloa Scholarship Fund will award an annual $500 scholarship for international students and students' international studies programs.
Ulloa passed away Dec. 26, 2002, and is survived by her husband, Sergio Ulloa, and four children.
Ulloa, born in San Luis Potosi, Mexico, on July 10, 1941, moved with her family to Athens in 1986, and started working for Hocking
in 1990. She became director of the Department of International Programs in July of 1997.
Ariana never turned away from any person who needed help. She always had a nice smile and encouraging words for her students
said John Light, president of Hocking.
She was known by most as Mama Ulloa, said Sergio Ulloa, Ariana's widow, because she was like a mother to her students, even providing financial support to some.
Over the years she gave a scholarship out of her own money sometimes loans and sometimes they went unpaid
Sergio said.
The fund is a component fund of the Foundation for Appalachian Ohio -- a regional community foundation that distributes donations for the 29 counties of Appalachia -- and is financed through the donations of Ulloa's students, friends and family.
The fund already is more than $10,000, and is growing consistently, said Angie Cantrell, chief operating officer for Foundation for Appalachian Ohio.
Students must be enrolled or accepted for full-time attendance at an accredited technical college, university or vocational/technical school to be eligible to receive the scholarship.
For more information or an application go to the Foundation for Appalachian Ohio's Web site, http://www.appalachianohio.org, or call (740) 753-1111. The application deadline is April 30, 2004.
Sergio said he hopes to continue Ariana's legacy of helping others by creating the scholarship fund.
