Senate backs new health insurance

Ohio University student senators adopted a resolution last night that supports a new company for next year's health insurance.

OU began the search for a new company earlier this year after the current one, Anthem Blue Cross Blue Shield, declined to continue service for next year.

Basically we lost our insurance and needed to find another one

Senator At-Large Kristen Jensen said during last night's meeting.

OU officials are looking into proposals presented by Student Resources, a part of Medical Mutual.

The company originally presented Plan I at $1,222 a year - a figure that Jensen called so incredibly high.

Student Resources did lower the amount to $1,113, and in the Senate's resolution they suggested that OU accept the bid, leaving Plan I the same, except to add access to Medical Mutual of Ohio and access to a national network outside of Ohio.

Jensen said this probably is the lowest bid OU will receive for the best services.

The resolution made many suggestions for amendments to Plan II, including a pharmacy card with a $10 co-pay for generic products and a $25 co-pay for brand-name products from pharmacies other than Hudson, as well as a change in the pharmacy maximum to $1,000 a year.

We'd rather you be able to spend your money as you'd want to Jensen said. She added that a lower pharmacy cap is not fair when you are taking medications that cost $500 per injection such as chemotherapy.

Plan II affects international students because they are required to carry that plan. Senate also suggested that OU adjust the plan to change the ambulance maximum to $500 a trip and increase the deductible to $50.

Since Plan II covers 100 percent of medical costs, international students will not have to pay as much out-of-pocket, Jensen said. However, under Plan I, the insurance covers 80 percent of fees.

Hudson business director Jacki Legg will decide next week whether to accept the bid from Student Resources.
