Softball 'strikes out' cancer to benefit national society

The Ohio softball team will participate in the StrikeOut Cancer event during its doubleheader against Northern Illinois, May 8. The event was originally scheduled for the Miami game this past Saturday but was rescheduled due to conflicts.

Ohio is requesting pledges for each strikeout the Bobcats throw. The strikeout totals in both games of the doubleheader will be included in the pledge total. Flat donations also will be accepted.

Last year the team participated in the event for the first time, and it was a success, coach Roanna Brazier said.

For the first year of participation it went very well

and we were happy with the results Brazier said. We raised over $500 last year.

The StrikeOut Cancer program is a collaboration between the American Caner Society and the Coaches Association. The program was created to raise cancer awareness, to reduce cancer risk through educational programs and to raise funds for the American Cancer Society's research and education.

Brazier said the coaches are encouraged to get involved every year, which is why the team decided to participate.

Pledges and donations will be accepted at the game or can be mailed to the team.

Utility player gives boost to offense

Utility player Jennifer Tisevich has continued to swing well for the Bobcats this season and is a key offensive player.

Tisevich leads her team with a .333 batting average, hitting six doubles and one triple. She also has recorded a total base count of 52, third highest on the team, and an on-base percentage of .390, also third on the team.

I have matured a lot as a hitter this year and I am a lot more patient at the plate

Tisevich said.

Tisevich is tied at first for most hits, with 41, and is third for walks, with 12. She has earned a slugging percentage of .419, third on the team, and has scored 16 times, also third on the team. She has 138 total plate appearances and 124 at bats. She said confidence plays an important part in her offensive play.

If I don't go up to the plate with confidence then I'm not as apt to do well

Tisevich said. I have to believe that every time I am at the plate I am going to get a hit.

Tisevich has played and started in all 40 games this year.
