An art history symposium showcasing the research of art history graduate students from Ohio and Wisconsin begins this evening.
In its fourth year, the symposium features 19 speakers from Ohio University, Ohio State University, Case Western Reserve University, the University of Cincinnati and the University of Wisconsin-Madison, beginning Friday evening at 6:30 and continuing Saturday morning at 9.
The keynote speaker is Barbara Bays, a program officer at the National Endowment for the Humanities in Washington, D.C.. Bays will speak on art funding and exhibitions sponsored by the endowment.
Bays is a distinguished art historian and a former OU professor, said, Katie Kempton, a 2003 OU art history grad who has been involved with the symposium since it began.
The symposium is not just for art history buffs, she said. Some of the topics covered include familiar images that might not be known in much detail.
The goal of the symposium is for graduate students to share ideas with their peers.
It's an opportunity to discuss matters with your peers
she said. It's always a pleasure to hear people talk of something they know really well she said.
Topics at the symposium include The Art of Ung-No Lee A Lady in Distress: James Ensor's Views of his Sister
and William Hogarth's Marriage à la Mode.
