Courthouse to receive repair

At yesterday's Athens County Commissioners meeting, members announced they received two bids for the Athens County Courthouse renovation project. A $731,000 bid came from Midstate Contractors in Marion, and the other bid was $677,700 from General Restoration in Columbus.

The exterior of the courthouse will undergo extensive renovations slated to be completed by December 2004. The renovations -which include roof repairs, window replacement and fixing the clock -will be supervised by the Historical Design architectural company from Columbus. The Athens County Engineer estimated costs to be about $725,000, said Commissioner Bill Theisen. Next Tuesday, an architect with the project will come to the commissioners meeting at 10:45 a.m. and make his recommendation for the bid.

In other county news:

- Athens County Emergency Medical Association Director Jody Harris asked the commissioners for their support in a Mental Retardation Developmental Disabilities Board lawsuit against the Ohio Department of Job and Family Services. Harris has asked all 88 county boards to write letters of support to protest the current funding system.

The Ohio Department of Job and Family Services is trying to limit the board's authority in controlling their funding, Harris said.

Commissioner Mark Sullivan said commissioners were just informed of the lawsuit today and, while they did not have enough details available to further comment on the case, they did agree to write the letter.

- Director of the community development plan at Tri-County Community Action Jessica Reitz asked the commissioners to sign the Community Housing Improvement Program grant application. The commissioners signed it. If awarded, the grant will provide $60,000 in funding to the Village of Glouster next year for home repairs for impoverished families.
