Faculty considers switch to semesters

Ohio University faculty discussed concerns about the possible switch to semesters at last night's Ohio University faculty senate meeting.

Some professors said they were worried about the lack of solid information to base a decision either for or against changing the academic calendar from quarters to semesters.

Another concern of some professors is that there is no documentation on whether semesters provide a better learning experience for students. Some professors also are concerned because there is no proof of what a new academic calendar would cost OU.

Provost Stephen Kopp said it is the right time to discuss switching to semesters particularly because the university will be adopting a new student information system and a new general education program.

Kopp said the decision should not be based on individual factors such as cost, but rather what schedule is best for OU's future.

The new president of the university will have the final say in whether or not OU will change its academic calendar; the earliest this switch could go into effect is fall 2006.

In other senate news:

- The senate passed changes to minimum enrollment/residency requirements. The new requirements will do away with the previous rule that students must complete their last 48 hours at OU. Students are now required to complete at least 50 percent of their required coursework at OU, said David Ingram, a professor of physics and astronomy.

- The senate heard the first reading of the proposal to increase base funding of the Athletics Department budget. The proposal would allow the athletic department to spend an additional $500,000.

The faculty senate wants the athletic department to be accountable for their spending, said Hugh Bloemer, chair of faculty senate.
