Housing for scholars expands

Johnson Hall will join Read Hall in what will be known as the Read/Johnson Scholar Complex in the 2004-05 academic year.

Because of students' positive response to Read Hall opening as a scholarship hall, Johnson Hall too will be home to scholars.

Both residence halls will house Honors Tutorial students, Copeland Scholars, College of Communication Scholars, Cutler Scholars, King Chavez Parks Scholars, ROTC scholarship cadets, Stocker Scholars, Templeton Scholars and students who maintain a 3.7 GPA or higher.

Ann Fidler, dean of the Honors Tutorial College, said the students' positive response to Read Hall becoming a scholar hall demonstrates that there is a need for this particular housing option.

I think it's because the atmosphere in Read is one that tries to promote respect for people who have substantial academic agendas

Fidler said.

Joseph Burke, director of Residence Life, said the response to Read Hall was overwhelmingly positive and a lot of students came forward and were very complimentary about their experiences there.

Leyna Denapoli, an Ohio University junior, said she enjoys living in Read Hall. It's quiet when you need to study she said. There are people who are just as motivated as you living around you. We are living with our peers. It's nice.

Fidler said the environment in Read Hall fosters learning between students. The best way to learn something is to teach it to someone else. That's been proven time and time again

she said.

Next year, only students who already live in Read Hall can choose to live there, with first-year students filling the rest of the beds. Rooms in Johnson Hall are also being reserved for first year students to complete the transition year to scholars housing.

Read Hall houses a maximum of 116 students; Johnson Hall canhold as many as 109. Both halls have 55 rooms each, most of which are doubles.

Johnson Hall currently is part of a complex with Lincoln Hall; however, next year Lincoln Hall will not be part of a complex.
