Italian slices provide quick, high-calorie eating option

It is an obvious fact that college students eat a lot of pizza. Ohio University students are no exception.

On any given Friday or Saturday night, Goodfella's Pizza at 35 N. Court St. sells more than 1,700 slices of pizza to hungry students and Uptown partiers between 5 p.m. and their 3 a.m. closing time, according to Goodfella's employee Dale Lindsey.

Goodfella's is only one of many pizza distributors in Athens. Other area pizza places are Avalanche Pizza, 329 E. State St.; Courtside Pizza, 85 N. Court St.; Domino's Pizza, 12 Mill St.; Papa John's 443 E. State St; and Pizza Hut, 903 E. State St. OU students frequent these establishments or have pizza delivered to their residence halls, apartments and houses all nights of the week.

I usually order pizza about twice a month. It's usually on weekends

OU freshman Leah Francescani said.

While many students sing the praises of this Americanized Italian favorite, eating pizza in large quantities or late at night can be detrimental to students' diets.

According to a 1994 article in Prevention magazine, one slice of regular or thin crust pizza has about nine grams of fat and at least 250 calories, without the addition of high-calorie toppings like pepperoni and sausage. Ordering pies with thick or super-thick crusts can add up to 100 calories to each slice.

Because more than one slice of pizza is often eaten in one meal, total calorie count for one person could exceed 750 calories fairly easily. Eating this many calories late at night, as many students do, means that there is little chance to burn any of them before bed.

We usually order it (pizza) late at night like after 10 Francescani said. But we just enjoy it

we don't think about the calories.

Despite the potentially high calorie and fat content in a slice of pizza, there is some nutritional value in pizza if students choose to top their pies with lots of veggies and stick to light cheese and a thin crust.
