Former Ohio quarterback Fred Ray recently tried out with the Columbus Destroyers of the Arena Football League.
Ray said he played quarterback on the scout team against the Destroyer's first-team defense.
They just wanted to see what kind of skills I had
Ray said.
Destroyers Director of Football Operations Chris Spielman contacted Ray's agent and arranged for a tryout, Ray said. During the tryout, Ray said he enjoyed his taste of Arena football.
It's very quick Ray said. You score a lot of points and it's a lot of fun.
Ohio football coach Brian Knorr said he thinks Ray can succeed in the AFL. Ray has the athletic ability to play more than one position if he needed, he said.
He has tremendous character
works hard and he's a great athlete
Knorr said.
The Arena Football League, Knorr said, is a good place for athletes to continue playing football after college.
It's given kids the opportunity to showcase their talents and maybe go to the next level
Knorr said.
Ray, who saw limited playing time during his senior year because of a shoulder injury, said he made a good impression at the tryout.
Mr. Spielman said I looked really good
he said.
Volleyball picks up three additional players
Volleyball coach Geoff Carlston recently acquired three more student-athletes for next season.
The defending Mid-American Conference champions will add Kate Wooldridge, Melissa Griffin and Stephanie Blackburn to the roster. Blackburn is the youngest sister of current Bobcat Michaele Blackburn.
Griffin and Blackburn each guided their respective high schools to State championships this year. Griffin led Whitehall High School to the State crown in Michigan and Blackburn earned First-Team All Ohio status for Ursuline Academy.
Wooldridge earned Concorde District MVP honors while playing for Chantilly High School in Virginia. She had a career-high 41 kills in a Northern Virginia Regional Tournament quarterfinal match.

In the sectional tournament later in the spring, the team advanced to the final, losing a heartbreaker 18-16 to Ohio State. Mikita said it was a tough loss.
It was a game I'll remember my entire life

Even with four seniors leaving, Mikita expressed optimism about the future of the team.
The team's future is looking incredibly bright
