A fight in front of Evolution last night turned into a melee when additional bystanders jumped into the fight, police officers said.
Athens Police Department Officer Brian Lushbaugh, who was one of four officers on Court Street when the bars closed at 2 a.m., said officers tried to dispel the fight that broke out in front of Evolution, 19 S. Court St., but were unsuccessful. More people joined in the fight, forcing officers to call in help.
Lushbaugh said officers used taser guns numerous times on the crowd. At least five people had been arrested by 3 a.m.
The streets and sidewalks were cleared as police cars crowded South Court Street. Lushbaugh said the street would remain closed until everything calms down.
Officers from Nelsonville Police Department, Ohio University Police Department and the State Highway Patrol arrived to help, Lushbaugh said.
No further information was available at press time.
