The Kent State baseball team makes its second appearance in three years at the South Bend Regional Tournament after defeating Eastern Michigan in the championship game of the Mid-American Conference Tournament.
The Golden Flashes face host and Big East champion Notre Dame in the first game of the tournament. The two teams have not met since Kent State took two games from the Irish April 19-20, 1968. The all-time series is tied, 6-6.
Kent State and Notre Dame face each other again 2 p.m. Friday at Frank Eck Stadium.
Marshall tennis duo falls in championship game
Marshall tennis players Jessica Johnson and Ashley Kroh watched a chance for a national title come to an end at the NCAA Doubles Championship match at Georgia's Dan Magill Tennis Complex. The pair lost, 6-4, 6-4, to UCLA's Daniela Bercek and Lauren Fisher.
Johnson and Kroh were going for the school's first-ever national title in an Olympic sport and defeated three teams ranked in the top eight on their way to a national title appearance.
They were ranked 32nd in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association poll and were the first MAC women's tennis players to win a match in the NCAA Championship Tournament, first team to earn All-America honors and first to ever play for a NCAA National Championship.
They ended their season with a 27-3 record.
Academic All-MAC baseball team announced
Faculty athletic representatives named 17 student-athletes to the 2004 Academic All-MAC baseball team.
Akron, Ball State and Eastern Michigan had three players voted onto this year's team, while Bowling Green had two. Central Michigan, Miami, Northern Illinois, Ohio, Toledo and Western Michigan each had one named to the team.
Akron's Darek Stanfield, Brady Steineck and Craig Welch were named to the team along with Ball State's Marc Franz, Brad Miller and John Pettibone and Eastern Michigan's Ryan Arnett, Brian Bixler and Ryan Ford.
Burke Badenhop and Jeff Warnock from Bowling Green were also named to the team, and Central Michigan's J.T. Jones, Miami's Brian Canada, Northern Illinois' Scott Simon, Ohio's Chris Bova, Toledo's Shawn Hurst and Western Michigan's Adam Rosales round out the team.
A nominee must have at least a 3.20 cumulative GPA and have participated in 50 percent of his team's games. First-year students and junior college transfers in their first year of residence are not eligible for the award. Outstanding academic and athletic accomplishments from only the current season are considered.
Forty-six athletes met all of the requirements.
