OU Senate presents awards

Between tears and laughter, debates and resolution adoptions, Ohio University student senators at last night's meeting -the final one of the year -presented one another with awards.

I look forward to seeing you in the future -either here at OU or in other places around the country doing the great things that I know you will

said Student Senate President Jamie Walter who will begin law school at Tulane University in the fall.

Senators opened the meeting by presenting both OU President Robert Glidden and graduate student Jim Hintz, who has been involved in senate in various forms during his seven years at OU, with the Bobcat Medal award. The award is the senate's way of honoring people who have made significant contributions to OU's students and faculty.

Jamie came to me and said she wanted to nominate President Glidden for the award and I thought it was a great idea said Senate Vice President Melissa Naroski. He's very student-friendly.

Annie Marsico, senator for the College of Arts and Sciences, agreed. She mentioned Glidden's long-time membership of the O-Zone and his work on buildings across campus as two examples of how he has made a difference at OU.

Upon accepting the award, Glidden said, I'm very highly honored. I'm also very embarrassed ... all the nice comments ... this feels kind of like an obituary.

While presenting Hintz with his award, Naroski, who has known him since her freshman year, said, I'd never seen anyone truly care

she said. He has done nothing but work for students.

Hintz said in reply, This kind of makes me feel old tonight

seeing some of you who started as interns now graduating and out the door

and I'm graduating too.

Senators also awarded seven of the graduating senators with Senator Emeritus awards.

Senators then discussed next year's budget and adopted a resolution calling for the establishment of a committee representing a majority of the campus community, and stating that should a survey be sent to the university community about a possible switch, students should help in its creation.

Vice President of Student Affairs Mike Sostarich serves as Student Senate's faculty advisor and called this year's senate one of the most successful of all time. At the meeting's end, he swore in the new executive board and senators.

In other senate news:

Academic Affairs Senator Ryan Mick announced that next year's printing fee will include 50 pages a month free with a five cent fee for each page beyond that amount.
