A longtime Athens musician will launch her national tour with a concert Friday at Donkey Coffee and Espresso, 17 1/2 W. Washington St.
Megan Cameron, a singer-pianist whose folky style has been compared to Tori Amos, is kicking off a month of cross-country travel that will include performances in Chicago, Denver, Minneapolis and Atlanta, among others.
When all my friends graduated (from Ohio University)
they kind of moved everywhere. I thought 'This will be really cool; I have a whole tour set up ' Cameron said.
Cameron said the tour is as much about visiting friends and seeing the country as promoting her CD, Another Page. By playing only 12 shows and a few open stages in a month, Cameron will have plenty of off days to relax and see the sights. Bassist Michael Riggins, who is also Cameron's fiancé, will join her on the road.
The tour has been in the works for three years, Cameron said.
Now I have the time; I have somebody who is willing to go along
and I have money to fund the trip
she said. She said enough money to pay for gas will be sufficient payment.
I just really enjoy having a totally fresh new audience. It's kind of scary but it's fun at the same time
Cameron said.
A 1999 graduate of OU's School of Music, Cameron taught music for a few years but said she neglected her own music in the process. She currently is enrolled at OU as a graduate student in counseling.
I really do want to continue to pursue a music career
but not make music be my whole way of supporting myself. I don't know how counseling and music will work together
but I have some ideas how it might work
Cameron said.
The tour will end back in Athens with a performance at the Blue Gator Sept. 4. Upon returning, Cameron plans to graduate and wed in June. She expects her next musical endeavor to be recording a new album with Riggins. The couple met when Riggins worked on Cameron's first album at his Rhythm Section Studio.
It probably won't cost her as much now
Riggins joked.
