Two weeks after the resignation of Provost Stephen Kopp, incoming OU President Roderick McDavis named Kopp's interim successor.
Kathy Krendl, dean of OU's College of Communications since 1996, will fill the position of interim provost for the upcoming school year, McDavis announced to the University late Tuesday.
Krendl's one-year appointment will begin Aug. 9. A permanent replacement will be named in March, 2005, after the conclusion of a national search slated to begin in September, according to a press release.
Kopp's resignation will take effect Saturday.
Krendl will make $175,000 as the interim provost, OU media specialist Jack Jeffery said. Krendl interviewed for the position with McDavis, as did College of Health and Human Services dean Gary Neiman and College of Fine Arts dean Raymond Tymas-Jones.
McDavis, who has yet to take up permanent residence in Athens, was out of town and unavailable for comment. Krendl was also unable to comment by presstime.
Phyllis Bernt, chair of faculty senate and a professor in the college of communications, said she thought Krendl was a good choice and stressed the need to include both internal OU candidates and national candidates in order to cast a wide net when choosing a permanent replacement.
In a time of transition, it is important to have someone in place even if they will not necessarily be in office for longer than a year, Bernt said.
Without a person
we'll lose momentum she said.
Before coming to OU, Krendl was dean of the School of Continuing Studies at Indiana University. She served as the chair of Indiana's telecommunications department from 1991-94, and was an assistant professor of telecommunications there beginning in 1983.
Krendl received her bachelor's degree in English from Lawrence University in Appleton, Wis. She later got a master's degree in journalism from Ohio State University, and received her doctorate in communication from the University of Michigan.
McDavis will name an interim dean for the College of Communication in the near future, according to a press release.
An interim replacement for retiring Vice President for Administration Gary North is expected within the next few weeks, Jeffery said. That person will be in place by Sept. 1, with a permanent replacement expected to begin for the following school year. North will officially step down Aug. 31.
